So, back to short walks. I’d like to pass on this extract from the Health Walks Programme for October - December which can be downloaded at www.horsham.gov.uk or purchased very cheaply by telephoning Jill Shuker on 01403 215269 Come and join us and reap the benefits. Walking is a great form of exercise. It can be incorporated easily into everyday life, regardless of how fit or how old you are. Walking is especially important for those with specific health problems or with very limited fitness. It can also play a major role in helping maintain a good level of fitness and keeping illness at bay. What’s more, it’s free. The main benefits of walking regularly are as follows: 1 . Walking can prevent and manage heart disease. 2. Regular walking can help reduce weight, prevent weight gain, strengthen bones and reduce osteoporosis. 3. Regular walking can improve balance, co-ordination and flexibility, which helps to prevent falls. 4. Exercise can help relieve anxiety and depression. 5. Walking in a group can be both relaxing and sociable. You can make new friends and get that feel good factor. Walking is good for the soul (or should that be sole). For all the walks, just turn up. You may also ring if you wish to find out more in advance. If you are unsure whether the walk will be right for you, or need advice on the clothing/footwear required the leader will be happy to discuss any queries with you. So give them a ring, or contact the Health Walks Co-ordinator for details on 01403 215269. Three levels grade the health walks.
Level 2 - Moderate walking speed, often stiles and inclines on the route. Level 3 - Medium to fast steady pace. The route could involve steep inclines, stiles and rutted terrain. “ There is always coffee and cake before you return home.” SO MUCH FOR WALKING - we know there are many people who can no longer walk very far and depend on their car - have you thought about car sharing when you know someone who lives near you and is going to the same meeting or to SAINSBURYS? You can drive to a nearby car park and walk the rest of the way perhaps - you will say you haven’t time - but you know that it is only a busy person who can MAKE TIME !!! Betty Marris
