Sally’s Children - water project report.

Gordon and Jackie chose to get involved in this project because of the basic need which the venture represents. Other charities are there addressing the working of the school itself, and Gordon and Jackie have taken on vital building work which lay outside the remits of the other groups.

Overall, they want to provide water for the school from two sources, using a spring and the runoff from the school roof during the rainy season. The construction of the water tanks to store the water is progressing well but the school roof has to be replaced because it is made of asbestos. This is particularly frustrating as it is raining hard at the moment but until a new roof is organised (when the children are on holiday)the water is running to waste.

Project Update Report

Stephen Kanja Water Project      25th May 2007

This report covers the period between 11th April to date. In this period the area down at the spring below Stephen Kanja Primary School has been excavated and the foundations of the lower walls of the first water tank have been built.

Excavation started on the 11th April 2007, the construction of the water tank started at the beginning of May 2007 and the following report shows the progress made so far.

Photo 3: The undergrowth from which the water springs is shown in the photo below. The water is channeled into the trough by the tree and from here it flows into the larger tank in the next photo. This area will be cleared of most of the surrounding vegetation and the trough will be re-constructed in order to allow a supplementary flow of water.

The outer walls will be under a great deal of pressure when the tank is full, therefore dividing walls have been constructed to provide additional support.
